The case of Goldman Sachs: What are the preventive actions needed?

Survey Participation

I have been vocal lately, trying to make my argument heard. No amount of legislative measure, governance and corporate lips service will guarantee the prevention reoccurrence of corporate misbehavior.
Today’s SEC investigation against Goldman Sachs (http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/16/goldman-sachs-paulson-markets-equities-sec.html?boxes=financechannelforbes ) emboldens my contention about corporate sustainability.

Senator Paul Sarbanes the man behind Sarbanes Oxley act (SOX) categorically depicted his disappointment on the last congressional gathering of International convergence of SOX that there seems to be discord among countries and their agreement to the legislative measurement. Despite many years have passed, Mr. Sarbanes asserts, corporation continue to follow same path of financial fraud causing greater impact to societies and economies of the world.

However, the fact that congressional committee ignored is “corporate Sustainability” in it’s true form. SOX or other legislative measure are good first step, but a deeper and more ingrained rendezvous is needed. We need to create a leadership construct and culture that foster human value ingrained corporate sustainability among corporations globally.

Let us not forget, corporations are DNA of modern economy and only 200 corporation’s revenues are bigger than combined GDP of the world when top ten GDPs are excluded. Therefore, ignoring and punishing few corporate leaders may not resolve the issue entirely that touches us all.

In my blogosphere, I questioned those corporate personalities and the leadership constructs, saying it is a greed or pathology? ( http://dhimanchowdhury.blogspot.com/2009/01/is-it-greed-or-pathology-who-is-to.html ). Soon thereafter I wrote several articles depicting Psychological and behavioral elements of leaders and corporations. These behavioral and psychological elements are in fact is part of the contention I am making through my doctoral research on “Corporate Sustainability”. Unless we integrate human values and institution the reoccurrence of behavioral normative that undermine our existence will continue. How do we go about doing so? Perhaps answer to your question would be again depicted in my presentation and end result of my research. The following entries are found [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlightened_self-interest Wikipedia]

"Enlightened self-interest is a philosophy in ethics which states that persons who act to further the interests of others (or the interests of the group or groups to which they belong), ultimately serve their own self-interest.

It has often been simply expressed by the belief that an individual, group, or even a commercial entity will "do well by doing good"

In contrast to enlightened self-interest is simple greed or the concept of "unenlightened self-interest", in which it is argued that when most or all persons act according to their own myopic selfishness that the group suffers loss as a result of conflict, decreased efficiency because of lack of cooperation, and the increased expense each individual pays for the protection of their own interests."

All over the world I have seen ‘unenlightened self-interest’ destroy businesses, families, and lives in general. The good news is that I have also seen productivity and positivity go through the roof when the awesome power of ‘enlightened self-interest’ is at work.

I believe there is a movement building that will see enlightened self interest out way self interest
